The University of Melbourne, VCA and MCM | Reimagining the digital experience for the VCA and MCM merging into the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music.

Role: Strategic Design Lead
Year completed: 2019

Problem

The Faculty of Fine Arts and Music was in a period of transition, relaunching itself as the home of the Victorian College of Arts (VCA) and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM).

Our team worked with the VCA and MCM to help them navigate this transition and understand their students, staff and partners needs and expectations through this shift. We collocated with the faculty to research and deliver customer insights and actions, a digital service journey and implementation roadmap to align delivery and Faculty teams to design and execute their new online experience across 5 websites.

Approach

  • We unpacked the objectives of the merger to understand the motivations and aims of the faculty and the wider University
  • We interviewed staff, students and partners to assess the impact and needs of each cohort
  • We held scoping workshops with the faculty and with staff and students to map the journeys and expectations
  • We mapped the digital aspect of these journeys to assess the role of digital to understand, support and educate each cohort and nurture their needs throughout a 6+ month period as the merger evolved
  • We collocated with the faculty to immerse in their day-to-day and provide mentorship to implement the journey maps, stories and digital assets into their IA and content
  • We guided their digital strategy and supported their vision into their daily decision making as the 5 websites shifted into a new brand identity

Outcome

  • We delivered an MVP service journey, enabling the faculty to redesign their 5 websites
  • We engaged in qualitative research to round out existing quantitative research.
  • We created a digital implementation roadmap to support the Faculty’s online experience
  • We created user stories aligned to the journey to align the research insights to the online experience for delivery teams to implement.
  • Capability uplift of human centred and strategic design methods into their digital experience ecosystems
